We're asking teachers in the area to send in videos capturing them dancing behind students (like in the video below) to be entered into a contest. News10@9 will choose the funniest video entered and do our show from the winning school's campus.

Two University of California, Davis, professors are among seven of the world’s leading biomedical researchers selected to give presentations this year in the Harvey Lecture series that has previously featured most recipients of the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

Stephen Kowalczykowski, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Microbiology, College of Biological Sciences, gave his lecture, “Watching Individual Proteins Working on Single Molecules of DNA: From Biophysics to Cancer,” on March 15.

Sacramento to again host CIF NorCal Regional Basketball Championship

SACRAMENTO, CA - For the 13th straight year, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) NorCal Regional Basketball Championship Tournament will return to Sacramento's Power Balance Pavilion in 2013.

Maloof Sports and Entertainments announced that the NorCal Regionals will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2013 and they will continue to host the CIF State Basketball Championships through the 2015 season.

Since 1992, the venue, formally known as ARCO Arena has hosted thousands of athletes in search of a State title in both boys and girls basketball. Among them, current NBA players Jason Kidd, Jeremy Lin, Tayshaun Prince, Jrue Holiday and Chuck Hayes - the Modesto Christian product currently playing with the Kings - have all competed and showcased their talents.

The agreement extend's the venue's 26-year history as a host site for both regional and state basketball tournaments.

REP. MIKE THOMPSON ANNOUNCES CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION WINNER

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-1) today announced that Julian Gordon of McKinleyville is the winner of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition. Julian’s artwork, an oil portrait on canvas titled “Erin”, will represent California’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. Capitol, where it will be displayed for one year. Julian, senior at Arcata High School who is taking Advanced Placement Art, and a guest will be flown to Washington, D.C. to attend an awards ceremony in June.

“Our district has extraordinary student artists. Every year I am impressed by their talent and creativity,” said Thompson. “Many thanks to the students who participated in this year’s competition, the parents, teachers and judges who make this annual competition possible, and the folks at the Artists of the Valley Gallery who hosted our wonderful reception. Congratulations to Julian.

UC Davis partners in $8.3 million effort to fight childhood malnutrition

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, will join in an international research effort to develop new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent malnutrition in infants and children around the world. 

The Breast Milk, Gut Microbiome and Immunity Project is funded by $8.3 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will be led by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. UC Davis will receive $1.1 million of the total.

The UC Davis researchers who will participate in the project are nutritionist Kathryn Dewey and microbiologist David Mills.

2 at large following Woodland armed robbery

WOODLAND, CA - Police are seeking two men accused of robbing a Woodland homeowner at gunpoint on Monday.

Sgt. Steve Guthrie of the Woodland Police Dept. said officers responded to a report of a woman yelling for help from her apartment on the 1700 block of Sixth St. around 11:00 p.m.

The woman informed police she was in her apartment when two men, let in by another individual, withdrew a handgun and demanded property, cash and medical marijuana, Guthrie said.

The two men fled the scene following the robbery.

One of the suspected robbers was described as a black man, about 24 years old, 5'8" tall, weighing 165 pounds. He had short black hair with sideburns and was last seen wearing a red tee shirt. Guthrie said the man also had a tattoo on the right side of his neck.
